Have you ever had an incredibly strict teacher, but they got you good results regardless? Well, dial that up to 100, and you might get something close to the monster that is JK Simmons's Fletcher in Whiplash. A teacher at a music school, he spots something in drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) and takes him under his wing, setting them both down a dark and sinister path. This film has it all: an Oscar-winning performance from Simmons; Teller truly coming into his own as an actor; great music; phenomenal editing; and pitch-perfect direction from Damien Chazelle. Worth seeing for the stunning final scene alone - but everything beforehand is incredible too. Truly, not to be missed.
