Damien Chazelle's (director of Whiplash and La La Land) latest epic is both a tribute and a middle finger to the film industry. Set during the transition from silent films to talkies in 1920s Hollywood, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters (Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva) as they try to navigate this era of outsized ambition and outrageous excess.
