In the Middle Ages, Swedish knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) returns from the Crusades to find the land ravished by the Black Death and religious hysteria. When Death comes for him, he challenges him to a game of chess and subsequently has to contend with existential questions about faith and morality.
This Ingmar Bergman film is an absolute classic of cinema and a must-see. It is often regarded as a masterpiece, with it referenced in a huge variety of films; most notably, of course, in (500) Days of Summer.
