In a politically tumultuous 20th-century China, Dieyi, a Peking Opera actor (Leslie Cheung), falls in love with his lifelong friend and fellow actor Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi). But their relationship begins to suffer when Xiaolou marries Juxian (Gong Li), a prostitute. The film follows these dynamic and conflicted relationships alongside the backdrop of a turbulent country.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and a nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards.
